"Microsoft and Oracle weren’t rocket ships. Who would have thought? They are two of the most valuable companies ever founded, in any industry, in any country. Microsoft took 8 years to reach $50 million in sales; Oracle took 10. It makes you wonder: Is it wise to prepare a business plan featuring steep hockey stick sales projections?"

"The solution to the enterprise quality problem is easy: foster a culture that doesn’t allow the company to make, produce, sell, or accept shit. Done. Well, it’s not quite that easy. But Steve Jobs is notorious for saying “this is shit” to shitty things, and that bluntness, I think, is essential to a culture that creates amazing products and experiences."

If you’re in a meeting with smart people and they start discussing a term or concept you don’t understand, what do you do?

Do you know what recombinant DNA is? Analytics? Chapter 7? Fair use? RSS? The Long Tail?

If smart people in your industry are talking about an issue you don’t know cold, it’s very important that you don’t just sit there and nod your head sagely. I think there are two constructive paths. The first is to ask. “Wait, I was with you until a second ago. What does that mean?” You’ll be amazed at how smart and engaging this makes you seem if you say it at the right time.

The second approach is to write it down and not go to bed that night until you know the topic better than the person who brought it up. How else, precisely, are you going to become one of the smart people?

Hello, and welcome

Three years and a few short hours later, my website is finally live.

Early April must be the time of year I think about building a personal site… I just checked the whois record for jseibert.com and, believe it or not, I registered the domain on April 4, 2006. Oh the irony.

With luck, the second post will not be another 3 years in the making… my goal is to post here periodically, when the mood strikes, but rely on the Twitter feed at left for daily content. Wish me luck.

As usual, the best is yet to come…

Jeff Seibert

Jeff Seibert co-founded Increo Solutions, Inc. in 2007 and served as its President and COO until its acquisition by Box.net, Inc. in August of 2009. He currently works for Box as a Software Engineer where he manages the integration of Increo's document preview and annotation technologies into the company's online document management platform.

Seibert gained experience at Apple, Inc. in both marketing and engineering capacities and served as Co-Coordinator of Stanford University's Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders seminar series. He was selected as a Mayfield Fellow in 2007 and received a B.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2008.

Seibert discovered his passion for entrepreneurship at a young age, founding Arios Software and developing and selling Macintosh desktop software during high school at Gilman in Baltimore, MD. Outside of work, he tries to spend as much time away from the computer as possible, whether it be surfing, snowboarding, or playing tennis.
